This is one of a series of caches placed along the old Kintore to Alford railway route. There is parking available and another cache ‘Tillyfourie quarry’ to be had for those that haven’t already done it.
The railway line, having left behind the relatively flatter lands of Kemnay and Monymusk will, just after Tillyfourie travel along the part of the line that caused the most trouble on a number of counts.
The quarrying industry was already a well settled business here even before the arrival of the line. So in 1858 when the owners of Mowlem’s quarry requested a siding it was permitted. But for some reason it was placed on the other side of the running line, which would have made the loading of the wagons a bit of a challenge. It also didn’t have a station when it first opened, but the directors changed their minds and a wooden one eventually opened in 1860. It was replaced with a stone built one in the 1870’s.
The quarrying industry provided the line here with most of its business. After Mowlem’s closed, Tillyfourie and Corrennie quarries both continued using the line. In the 1930’s with the closure of the quarry, the sidings and passing loop were removed.
The first stone building on your right [with the circular window] is the station. It fell into disrepair after the closure of the line and remained like that for many years, till it’s adaptation into a house. You can still see where the platform would have been and it still retains the same wooden style of fence [possibly the original?]. The steps are a newer addition.
You have to continue on past the station house to get to the cache. Due to the tree cover the clue is very specific. If someone gets better co-ords I will change them.
