"No Lake Here"

Welcome to Lakeville Cemetery in Grand Forks county

This cemetery is located in the Lakeville Township. The township and the proposed community that was to be built in the area were named for Stewart and Lumby Lakes which are two and half miles northeast of this location.

The land was set aside by a warranty deed in 1885 for the town of Lakeville. John Stewart, a homesteader, was the first to be buried here. The cemetery was used for just over ten years. After 1900, most of those interned in the Lakeville cemetery were moved to the Middle Grove Cemetery (see NDSQ #2) about three miles east-southeast of here.

There are only two grave makers left at this location. The larger of the two marks the graves of the mother and two small children from the Bakken family, who died in a house fire on June 4, 1887. Also buried here is the first born of Charles and Lottie Olson who died on June 22, 1889. Lottie Olson and her other children are buried at the Cottonwood Farm Cemetery roughly three miles north of here.

The inscriptions are written in Norwegian.
