Versteinertes Holz ist eine Art von Fossilien. Es besteht als fossilem Holz, bei dem alle organischen Bestandteile durch Mineralien (meistens ein Silikat, wie z.B. Quarz) ersetzt wurde, wobei die ursprüngliche Struktur des Holzes erhalten blieb. Der Versteinerungsprozeß geschieht unterirdisch, wenn das Holz unter Sedimenten begraben und zunächst einmal durch den Sauerstoffmangel konserviert wird. Mineralienreiches Wasser, das durch die Sedimente fließt, lagert Mineralien in den Pflanzenzellen ab. Wenn das Lignin und die Zellulose der Pflanze zerfallen , formt sich ein steinerner Abguß an ihrer Stelle.
Elemente wie Mangan, Eisen und Kupfer, die während des Versteinerungsprozesses im Wasser bzw. im Schlamm enthalten sind, sorgen für eine große Vielfalt an Farben. Reine Quartzkristalle sind farblos, aber wenn Kontaminanten zu dem Prozeß hinzukommen, nehmen die Kristalle eine gelbliche, rötliche oder andere Färbung an.
Versteinertes Holz kann die ursprüngliche Struktur des Holzes in all seinen Details bewahren, bis hinunter auf mikroskopischer Ebene. Strukturen wie Jahresringe und die verschiedenen Gewebe können häufig beobachtet werden.
Versteinertes Holz hat auf der Mohs-Härteskala einen Wert von 7, den gleichen wie Quarz.
An den angegebenen Koordinaten findet Ihr einige verkieselte Baumstämme aus dem Jungtertiär (Miozän).
(Der hervorgehobene Text muß auf dem Schild zu finden sein, sonst steht ihr an der falschen Stelle und schickt uns dann wahrscheinlich auch die falschen Antworten!) :bad:

Petrified wood (from the Greek root "petro" meaning "rock" or "stone", literally "wood turned into stone") is a type of fossil: it consists of fossil wood where all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals (most often a silicate, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals in the plant's cells and as the plant's lignin and cellulose decay away, a stone mould forms in its place.
Elements such as manganese, iron and copper in the water/mud during the petrification process give petrified wood a variety of color ranges. Pure quartz crystals are colorless, but when contaminants are added to the process the crystals take on a yellow, red or other tint.
Petrified wood can preserve the original structure of the wood in all its detail, down to the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings and the various tissues are often observed features.
Petrified wood has a Mohs hardness of 7, the same as quartz.
At the given coordinates, you will find some petrified treestumps from the miocene age.
