Many caches require sharp eyes to find. For this one, it helps to have sharp ears!
You will use an AM radio in this search. Any AM radio will do, however the more sensitive it is to weak signals, the better. Your task is to use the radio to listen carefully for a squeal that can be heard when you are within about a foot of two waypoints, which are small 3" square plastic containers hidden in rocks.
Tune your AM radio to somewhere around 530 kHz. All you should hear is a hiss if you are not close to the waypoints. When you get near "ground zero" on your GPS, start listening for the waypoint by waving your radio slowly around any suspected hiding places. Get the radio as close to the rocks as possible. You should be able to hear the squeal without actually moving any rocks or putting the radio in any deep crevices. Once you hear the squeal, then move a rock or check a crevice to reveal the waypoint.
This cache is similar to the original short-lived "I Can Hear It Now" cache, except the noise signals are a little stronger and the area is hopefully safer.
IMPORTANT NOTES AND TIPS:
1. When searching, keep your GPS, cell phone, and any other electronic gadgets several feet away from your AM radio, since the electronic circuits in those devices will also produce noise on an AM radio.
2. Please replace the container EXACTLY as you found it and re-hide well. It is especially important to orient the container in the proper direction, with the coordinates facing out. This is because the signal from the circuit is somewhat directional.
3. There is no need to open the containers at the waypoints.
4. Twist your radio in various directions while listening for the squeal. Most radios have the AM antenna located near the top of the radio.
5. It may be more difficult to do this cache at night, since distant AM broadcast signals may interfere.
6. The squeals may be faint as the signals are necessarily weak for reasonable battery life. Don't expect to be able to "hone in" on the cache from a few feet away. Instead, test each suspected hiding spot by placing your radio right up to it. Again, you should be able to hear the squeals without moving anything or reaching into deep crevices.
In all, there are two waypoints and a final cache. The listed coordinates are for the first waypoint. The final cache does NOT contain an electronic circuit, so you will NOT use the AM radio to find it. Total walking distance is less than half a mile.
It is certainly possible to do this entire cache without an AM radio, however the search for the two waypoints could take longer.
