Geocache Description:

This is the 15th in our series and is located very close to the original station of Winston. You can park very close to the cache and will require quite a bit of stealth as it is a high muggle area (at certain times of the day)

The station had staggered platforms with the the main station building on the up platform on the west side of the level crossing. The down platform with a waiting shelter was on the east side of the level crossing. There was a footbridge on the west side of the crossing.
The goods yard was on the down side of the line opposite the up platform. There were originally two sidings, one serving a goods shed and the other serving coal drops. By 1894 a third siding had been added.

The station building and up platform were demolished in August 2002 and replaced by a new office building for John Dickinson Transport Ltd. Some of the original platform edge stones have been reinstated in front of this building and the station name has been remounted on the front of the building. This is assumed to be the original.

The goods shed still stands opposite the station as does the stationmaster's house which is now a private residence. The crossing keepers house also still stands as a private residence on the east side of the level crossing. The site of the down platform is now occupied by a car park for John Dickinson Ltd. A row of station cottages are in private occupation on the south side of the level crossing site.

Although the station opened to the public on 9th July 1856 there was a formal opening of the line the previous day. When fares were being fixed prior to opening, company minutes refered to the station as 'Staindrop'.
