This is a riverside cache, without tree cover, open views to one side and is situated on a quiet path. The return walk is little more than half a mile and apart from the initial steps down is a fairly well surfaced route.
‘The Littlest Oswald’ is so named as it’s our shortest walk and smallest cache in the Auchincruive Estate area. Free Parking is available and has been way marked on this page. Park next to the information boards and route maps for the area.
Parking: Please note that parking is available 24hours a day. If the gates at the Bridge are closed enter via the main Agricultural college entrance and turn right. This access has an automatic barrier so don’t be put off. Follow this road past Oswald Hall and the parking is at the riverside on the right. This route in gives a close view of Oswald Hall where Robert Adams work can be appreciated.
Leave the estate by the gated entrance and cross Oswald’s Brig taking the discreet path on the South Side of the River Ayr below the monument.
The route follows an old path now largely used by the local angling club although a look at some of the ‘architecture’ below the trail hints at its age. Have a look down the riverside steps near to the footbridge for a good example. And watch out for the more recent steps! We wouldn’t like to meet the guy who built these ones. If you do pause for a look, and the river is low, this is an excellent site for a view of Oswald’s Brig which is slightly further upstream.
Why this route? This walk is an excellent wee site for collecting chestnuts with numerous chestnut trees along the river bank. It would be a good place to bring the ‘weans’ or ‘grand weans’ when the season is right. Flashbacks to the dim and distant past anyone?
With no tree cover we are being a wee bit nasty with the clue. The Littlest Oswald. Does it have a sting in the tail?
