Geocache Description:

Dowkabottom Cave and a plethora of cairns

This cache is located on Hawkswick Clowder overlooking the village of Hawkswick in Littondale. The whole area is covered in a fabulous limestone pavement and has spectacular views and many interesting features including the amazing Dowkabottom Cave not far from the cache. The cache itself is hidden amongst a bank of cairns that can be clearly seen from the valley below. If you want to avoid being blocked by dry stone walls I would approach this cache from Hawkswick. There's a small parking area (for 4 or 5 cars) and an honesty box requesting £1.50 for the day. From here, walk over the stone bridge and head left following the track and driveway to the Arncliffe Road. Cross the road and head though the metal gate following a faint vehicle track to a second gate ( All waypoints are given below ). From here, walk over the limestone pavement to a gap through the wall. You may be tempted to head straight for the cache from here but I would take the following short detour to the spectacular Dowkabottom Cave. Follow the path to a wall stile and climb over. If you're walking with children, a dog or in thick fog take care from this point. The cave is large, deep and not far away but is very well disguised by the undulations of the ground. For obvious reasons DO NOT enter the cave unless you are suitably equipped and suitably experienced. When excavated, the caves were found to contain two crouched human burials and various artifacts from the Neolithic or Bronze Age including flints, bone combs, pottery, coins and brooches. From the caves it's only a short distance to the cairns, the cache and the fabulous views below. There's an awesome 'First to Find' medallion enclosed for one lucky cacher.

And there's more .......

If you liked this cache there are many more 'Sykesfamily' caches in similar, awe inspiring locations scattered around the Yorkshire Dales National Park and surrounding valleys. So grab your walking boot, pack your sandwiches, leave your troubles behind and head for the hills .... Enjoy!!
