GPS, or Global Positioning System, was
developed by the US Department of Defense. This satellite
navigation system was intended for military use and therefore the
signals were scrambled, limiting accuracy for civilian use to about
100 meters.
On May 1, 2000, the President
announced that this scrambling, known as Selective Availability
(SA), would be turned off. Civilians were then able to enjoy
accuracy on the order of 10 meters. Geocaching was born the very
next day.
On April 1, 2004, the first recorded death
of a Geocacher was reported right here in Grand Traverse County.
Apparently, an unnamed Geocacher went out into the thick Michigan
woods and forgot to bring spare batteries for his GPS, got lost and
wondered aimlessly until he died of exposure and starvation. His
body was found several months later. Initially, he was buried next
to a golf course, as you can see by the picture of his tombstone
below. After he was identified, his will was found and probate was
completed, his body was exhumed and he was buried on the spot he
died, in accordance with his last will and testament. Please be
respectful of his tombstone, for it is hallowed geocaching
ground.
The cache is in a somewhat fragile container,
so please handle it with care
