Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the beautiful riverside Centennial Park at the west end of Prescott. Parking is located at N 44° 42. 278 W 075° 31.252 near the tennis courts. The cache is located a short walk from parking area. Site is highly popular during the summer season due to the public pool and nearby Kelly’s beach.

At the turn of the century, Prescott's reputation as a thriving community on the St. Lawrence River was largely attributable to the success of J. P. Wiser's and Sons Distillery. The distillery operation was centred on the waterfront at the west end of the town. During the late 1800s, the Wiser family built beautiful homes on the periphery of the distillery property and some of these homes still survive as a living testament to the architectural fascinations of the time. In the early 1900’s, Wiser’s was the third largest distillery in Canada, employing over 100 workers.

Wiser gave his entire life to his distilling empire. After he died his sons had trouble filling their father's shoes. The dynasty was collapsing. The Wiser distillery was purchased by Corby Distilleries and production was moved to the Belleville area in 1932.

Wiser’s recently released a limited edition ‘Red Letter’ whiskey and even created a new cocktail they named “The Prescott” in order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Wiser’s distillery.

Nothing remains of the distillery today, and the site was turned into a park to celebrate Canada’s centennial in 1967, hence the name “Centennial Park”. This is a great park to have a picnic, facilities include tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, children’s play structure, public boat access, public swimming pool and beach.

Of further interest the area located to the east of the cache (currently the Canadian Coast Guard Base) was the former location of the Prescott Brewing and Malting Company managed by John Labatt.
