Geocache Description:

Approach to the coordinates is best if you turn North off the the highway on the Eastern side of the bridge and end up on the northern side on the dirt road that passes under the main Flinders Highway road bridge. Using Google Earth on these coordinates gives you an idea of the lay out. There is no parking against the coordinates on the southern side of the road on the eastern end of the bridge.

This small town is noted for its copper mining (and gold- extracted with the copper). The massive Ernest Henry Mine is about 30 km to the north, and there are many smaller mines and diggings around the town itself.

Situated in the middle of the cattle country of Western Queensland this area is on the edge of the ranges to the west and south and the open Mitchell grass plains to the east and gulf country to the north.

It was here that Patsy Durack waited a year for the drought to ease in the 1890’s, and while waiting decided to ride back to Brisbane to get fresh horses. He had been driving his cattle from The Thargomindah area in the Far South West of Queensland to Argyle Station on the Ord River in WA. The property is now under the massive Lake Argyle. (Refer to the story of this journey in the book “Kings in Grass Castles” by Mary Durack)

At the above coordinates find the name Ah Sam - a labourer and record the date against his name. A/B/CDEF

Using these values, proceed to the coordinates below, you can get there easily in a conventional car, however you will have to proceed what would seem to be past the coordinates a little way, but all will become clear if at the first opportunity you then turn towards them.

S20 4(B).(A-B)(B)(F-B)
E140 29.(C)(D-C)(E)

You will notice a couple of Surveyor General’s datum points, the cache is to the South West of these. Remember to take a photo of them and their GPS cords if you also want to record the visit as a bench mark.

As you will notice there is a bit of broken glass and tins in the area, so please recover the cache quite well so locals don’t find it as I don’t think they will respect the don’t vandalise request.
Hoped you liked this cache and learnt a little more about the outback.
