I had made up a new cache to place while I was going to be out
riding in the Red Mountain area, and while viewing the virtual
cache GCJHQ1, inspiration struck.
"Ground Control to Major Adams" is my own tribute to the fallen,
forgotten hero of the American space program. Placed in view of the
Adams monument, this cache will serve as added incentive for folks
to come out.
There are many ways in to the cache, and I'll leave the
navigation up to you. If you are in a regular 2-wheel drive
vehicle, I would suggest navigating to N35 25.077 W117 35.581 and
then take the dirt road in a north-westerly direction towards
GCJHQ1. From there, you will best be able to
navigate to this cache. An ordinary car will get you close, but if
you want to get closer to the base of the hill, you'll need a 4x4
or off-road vehicle. Remember that if you get in sand, speed and
momentum is always your friend, no matter what. Always, always,
always stay on the power in sand.
This should be an easy find. You're looking for a camo'd metal
ammo can, hidden in classic desert style. The hike up the hill
isn't too bad. Don't forget to watch out for the local desert
critters. A snake bite is an expensive, painful and ugly way to end
a great day of caching! I would also suggest bringing some water
with you so that you can sit and enjoy the view.
Cache initial contents include:
- A copy of David Bowie's Space Oddity (I think
this could not be more appropriate!)
- An LED nightlight
- The Zork Anthology for DOS and Macintosh (better have an old
machine lying around for this. A hollow voice says, "PLUGH!")
- A Pacific Stereo sticker
FTF also gets to move ABXGuy's Race Bug to a new location.
