Geocache Description:

****** PLEASE NOTE ******

THE CACHE IS NOT WITHIN THE MONUMENT COMPOUND OR DSW

A facinating megolithic feature in a most unasuming site, on the road between Enstone and Fulwell. We hope this cache pleases those seeking a cache with an 'old time' feel!

Almost hidden, in a small wooded enclosure right at the side of the road, you will find the remains of this large chambered tomb. Thought to be between 4,500 and 5,500 years old, the site is known as The Hoar Stone, with the largest of the three stones known as 'The Old Soldier'. The term 'Hoar' is thought to originate from the Goddess, 'Hoeur'.

As always, there is much folklore surrounding this site. Local legend says that the stones would return to their places if anyone tried to move them. Another legend says that the stones are the remains of an old man, his horse and his dog, which were turned to stone for reasons unknown. Not forgetting the compulsory spooky element……….. it is said that The Old Soldier can sometimes be seen rising from the tomb and floating hauntingly horizontal, along the road to the village. This is really a rather unnerving image and far scarier than ghosts or ghouls I reckon!

The signal was poor on all visits we have made to this site (hence the detailed clue), so please feel free to log improved co ords.THE CACHE IS NOT NEAR,ON OR IN ANY DRY STONE WALLS.

We hope you enjoy your visit to this historic location.
