Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches placed along the old Kintore to Alford railway route. There is parking available

Alford had a school, shop, market stance, inn and a strung out collection of 30+ houses when the line initially finished here. But there were also signs of its impending expansion. The Station Hotel had just been completed and the Town and County Bank was also just being built.

The station was busy with both passengers, livestock, farm produce and timbers from further up Strathdon. By far the strangest item that was deemed to have been delivered by rail, was a new Daimler motor car for the local Doctor. It was maybe the start of the finish of the rail as the road became an easier and more convienient method of travel.

Ultimately is was nationalisation that saw the demise of many rural lines. On Friday 31st December 1965 the very last train left Alford station.

Very little of the track line can be seen in Alford apart from where the steam train runs back and forth to Haughton Park. With the newer estates on the right [on your way in from Whitehouse] covering more of it, the position of this cache was very much dictated by what remains. I had so wanted to get this last cache on the old rail way bed, but from the cache's hiding place at least you can look down onto where it would have run.

There's also a handy parking spot too!
