Geocache Description:

One of a series of 6 caches on easy pathways in Woodlands and Pasture.

This is the 1st in a series of caches forming a 5 mile circular route based around the GAIT BARROWS National Nature Reserve. We recommend they be done in a clockwise direction, but they could all be done as individual caches. Ample parking for 3 cars may be found at the start point at N54. 11.309 W002. 48.256.

The reserve contains a wide variety of rich wildlife habitats, from spectacular limestone pavements with their unique range of wild flowers including the rare angular Solomon’s Seal, to the tranquillity of Haweswater where Bitterns and Water Rails skulk amongst the reedbeds.

Much of the Woodland is managed as coppice, where rare brown fritillary and pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies thrive. You may be fortunate in Spring to see examples of the first of the butterflies, the yellow brimstone. The limestone grasslands are rich in insect life, while the cattle grazed pastures provide a lush, flower rich landscape through the Spring and Summer. We hope you enjoy your visit. Please look after the site by following The Countryside Code and by not disturbing wildlife.

From the parking spot travel NNW through the gate and through the woodland. Cross the stile after 0.2miles and head North across the field. Pass through the tree covered walkway with intersting limestone outcrops to the East. Keep an eye open for the Buzzard wheeling overhead looking for prey. cut through the dogleg in the Hawthorn headgerow and look West for superb views of Arnside Tower.Ahead of you you'll see a bridge formed from fantasic limestone slabs ...the cache is hidden nearby.
A medium sized snap top plastic container has a few goodies including pens, erasers etc.

Carry on across fields heading NW to a gap between two woods. Head North towards a metal gate and stile at the road. TAKE CARE NOW ON THIS SHORT ROAD SECTION AS IT CAN BE QUITE BUSY. Follow signs for Carr Bank at the next road junction. Then take a footpath signposted to Hazleslack at the next junction. You are on your way to the next in the series... GAIT BARROWS. OUTCROP.
