Geocache Description:

The second in a series of 6 caches through woodland and pasture.

This is the 2nd in a series of caches forming a 5 mile circular route based around the GAIT BARROWS National Nature Reserve. We recommend they be done in a clockwise direction, but they could all be done as individual caches. Ample parking for 3 cars may be found at the start point at N54. 11.309 W002. 48.256.

The reserve contains a wide variety of rich wildlife habitats, from spectacular limestone pavements with their unique range of wild flowers including the rare angular Solomon’s Seal, to the tranquillity of Haweswater where Bitterns and Water Rails skulk amongst the reedbeds.

Much of the Woodland is managed as coppice, where rare brown fritillary and pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies thrive. You may be fortunate in Spring to see examples of the first of the butterflies, the yellow brimstone. The limestone grasslands are rich in insect life, while the cattle grazed pastures provide a lush, flower rich landscape through the Spring and Summer. We hope you enjoy your visit. Please look after the site by following The Countryside Code and by not disturbing wildlife.

From the road junction south of Hazleslack take the footpath signposted to Hazleslack. Climb the gentle winding pathway through the recently cleared coppice where there are wild orchids, cowslips, primroses growing in spring and we suspect, in Autumn, ample Blackberries for those keen on the preservation of wild fruits.

The medium sized snap top plastic cache container should be easily located.

After locating the cache carry on NE towards a stile/gate onto a Campsite. Cross the field and join the track, crossing to the gate/stile in front of The Tower. TAKE GREAT CARE ON THIS SHORT ROAD SECTION. Turn SE towards Hazleslack Tower Farm where you should look out for the pair of rock Hard pigs and the feathered guard dog (Peacock) Take the road SW to Yealand and after a short distance take the Bridleway to Rollywood Lane and on to the next cache. GAIT BARROWS. PRICKLY PROBLEM.
