Geocache Description:

The 5th in a series of 6 caches in Woodland and Pasture.

This is the 5th in a series of caches forming a 5mile circular route based around the GAIT BARROWS National Nature Reserve. We recommend they be done in a clockwise direction, but they could all be done as individual caches. Ample parking for 3 cars may be found at the start point at N54. 11.309 W002. 48.256. The reserve contains a wide variety of rich wildlife habitats, from spectacular limestone pavements with their unique range of wild flowers including the rare angular Solomon’s Seal, to the tranquillity of Haweswater where Bitterns and Water Rails skulk amongst the reedbeds. Much of the Woodland is managed as coppice, where rare brown fritillary and pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies thrive. You may be fortunate in Spring to see examples of the first of the butterflies, the yellow brimstone. The limestone grasslands are rich in insect life, while the cattle grazed pastures provide a lush, flower rich landscape through the Spring and Summer. We hope you enjoy your visit. Please look after the site by following The Countryside Code and by not disturbing wildlife. After leaving GAIT BARROWS. THE AVENUE. head S across the field keeping to the west boundary. Cross a stile and just before taking the dog leg through the trees have a look for the deer in the field towards the South. Take the meanering pathway down through the avenues of trees and crossa stile into the wood. Coming out of the wood cross the bridleway into a field. Head SW for 50m/yds and go through the stile signposted to Haweswater. Then head NW to the next cache which is contained in a medium snap top plastic container. After finding the cache head downhill WNW to the corner of the field. Cross astile and turn W . Shortly after entering wood turn SW and take path through wood and join raised board path. Continue SW past cottages and down road to Red Bridge. TAKE GREAT CARE ON THE NEXT SECTION OF ROADWAY AS THIS ROAD IS VERY BUSY. Take first footpath on right SP Challan Hall and cross Railway Line (WITH GREAT CARE)!!!!!!!!!! on to next and last cache in series ,GAIT BARROWS. ASHES TO ASHES.
