Geocache Description:

Ten memorials at one location, no hiking required. There used to be only six memorials on the courthouse front lawn, but when the old courthouse was restored in 2008, a few more new monuments were added. There is now a total of ten monuments. Can you find all of them?

This is a virtual cache, nothing to leave and only memories to keep.

The oldest monument, dedicated to Daniel Boone, seems to have gone missing in action. Update: Last time we visited the gift shop inside, the plaque was on a chair. We do not believe it will be placed outside again.

Another monument with a rather interesting history is the tall grey marble shaft with the simple inscription, "To The Confederate Soldier." It was originally erected and dedicated at the turn of the 20th century. Just about every southern town has a Confederate Monument because those men who fought for the South are still regarded as heros. Wherever there is such a monument, you will find that most of them were dedicated around the turn of the century, and for a very good reason: To The Confederate Soldiers During the Reconstruction, the South was a defeated nation, and occupied by the soldiers of the conqueror. They imposed military control over the land, and monuments to the defeated Confederate Soldier were prohibited. When Reconstruction was completed, the occupying soldiers withdrew, and the southern states returned to the Union. Money was tight at that time, and there wouldn't be money for things like this for many years. Hendersonville was no different, and when our monument was erected and dedicated, it was placed in the MIDDLE of Main street at the interseceion of 1st. Avenue! At that time, this was the center of town. Life was slower back then, and most travel was by horse & buggy. As the automobile grew in numbers, the monument in the middle of the street became a problem. In April of 1925, it was moved to the northeast corner of the courthouse lawn, where it sat until 2008 when the courthouse was restored. It now rests in the northeast "alcove" of the courthouse.

As stated earlier, there are now ten monuments distributed around the grounds of the courthouse. There are also two time capsules on the premises. We hope you enjoy exploring the grounds in search of the answers to the following questions.

General Lee - Dixie Hwy

The monument in memory of Robert E. Lee and to mark the route of the Dixie Highway was erected in what year? This monument may prove to be a little on the elusive side, but rest assured, it IS still there...

On the Viet Nam memorial, several major cities are indicated. How many?

On the memorial, "In honor of Revolutionary soldiers buried in Henderson County," how many soldiers names are listed? Note: several additional names were added to this monument on an additional plaque in 2008. What is the total number of names from the main monument and the additional plaque?

Oh, I did mention that there are two time capsules located on the premises. When will they be opened?

Please do not list the answers in your log! email them to me. I must receive your email with the answers to the above questions within 24 hours of your find log, or your find will be deleted. Please allow others to enjoy the search. Any logs which contain answers to the questions or other spoilers will be deleted.

Although no hiking is required, a wonderful stroll would be down five blocks each side of Main Street. Main Street is serpentine, lined with trees and huge flower and tree planters. Along the route you will find a superb bakery, several antique malls and shops, coffee shops, fine restaurants, sandwich shops, an Irish Pub and eatery, Skyland Cabaret, art galleries, fine gift shops, 2 market places, collectible toy shops, a garden botique, an old timey pharmacy and eatery, a book store, Banks (in case you spend too much time in the shops), Mast General Store, many antique shops, friendly people and much more. Enjoy your visit to our old courthouse, and try to allow a little extra time to visit our quaint town.
