Geocache Description:

A cache placed for users of the Waverley Road trail to enjoy.

When Capt. Hardwicke first observed the estuary of the Don River in 1823 he remarked that the forests were so thick as to be impenetrable and the land was therefore inhospitable. The discovery of gold in the colony of Victoria with its sudden increase of gold seekers and the corresponding increasing need for building materials was met through the logging of the forests of Don and Forth. Thus the fertile farmlands of the region were cleared.

This pathway was built over the approximate route of the horse drawn tramway that was used to bring the timber out of the surrounding forests down to the Don River Port. The original power was a portable steam engine but this was replaced by horses. The tramway was abandoned in the late 1880's before BHP and the Tasmanian government built the railway on the Eastern side of the river during the time of the First World War.

The cache is placed in a spot where you can ponder about the horses hauling timber along the iron rails, or more pragmatically what fish you can catch in the river.

The cache container is now a magnetic eclipse tin, no room for swaps. The cache is reached easiest from the path (if you lie down). Please bring your own writing implement.
