Step back in mariner time just a bit and take a look at some of the
tall sailing ships, wooden boats, a paddlewheel house boat and even
a boat that was owned by Al Capone during his stay at nearby
Alcatraz Island back when he was a guest there.
If the gate is open, walk on through and stroll the refurbished C
& H sugar dock that is now in private ownership. The old dock
burned down sometime in the 1970's or 1980's and was left in
disrepair until someone bought up the area and turned it into an
eclectic, deep water marina. On the southeastern end of the dock
you will see the white and green paddle wheeler, and across from it
is the old ship formally owned by Al Capone. Apparently due to his
incarceration, he never actually set foot on his boat. From what I
hear it would take $3,000,000.00 to restore her.
Have a nice time and please remember to respect the area as many of
these boats are private residences.
On December15, 2008 dkata had a great log that had additional
history of the dock that he shared with us. Check it out here
