An introduction to geocaching discussion and demonstration will be given at McCloud Nature Park in conjunction with National Trails Day.
Hendricks County Parks and Recreation is hosting a Hiking Spree in observance of National Trails Day, on Saturday, June 7th. In addition to other activities, geocachers have been invited to share their passion with the uninitiated and curious, or just the person who got a GPS receiver for Christmas and hasn't figured out what to do with it yet. The park is also providing some loaner GPS receivers so anyone can participate in finding out what all the buzz is about for this high tech treasure hunting game.
Three sessions will be held at 11:00, 1:00 and 3:00, gathering at the picnic shelter opposite the parking lot from the Nature Center. A panel discussion giving an overview of the sport will be followed by hands on demonstrations on the nearby Trail 5. If you've heard of geocaching but didn't know how to get started this is a great opportunity for you to try it out with the help of experienced, enthusiastic cachers in the area. You too could use billions of dollars in satellites to search for tupperware in the woods.
This is also an invitation for seasoned cachers to come out and add to the discussion, help answer questions and give trail demonstrations. We especially welcome volunteers who are technical wizards to help with questions of that nature. McCloud Nature Park has nearly 5 miles of trails and 5 existing caches, and we'll be placing a new cache in honor of this event. With three different sessions a group picnic isn't very practical, but we welcome a pitch in of finger foods, desserts and drinks in the shelter to aid in our fellowship with new cachers. If you're already a geocaching enthusiast, please bring a snack to share, and post on your RSVP which session(s) you are able to attend so we can make sure we'll have helpers available for all sessions.
Given coordinates are for the park entrance on Hughes Road, near CR900, County Line Road for Putnam/Hendricks County. See the web link at the top of the page for more info about the park.
