Geocache Description:

During World War 2 a strategy was developed, code named Starfish, the intention of which was to lure enemy bombers away from important locations in the United Kingdom. Liverpool, and in particular the docks, were one of the locations identified.

14 sites were identified around Liverpool, one being sited at Cabin Hill, Formby. The deception was achieved by an array of decoy lights along the coast which gave the impression to enemy bombers of being over the docks.

As bombs were dropped oil fires would be started in order to simulate explosions. The operation would appear to have been reasonably successful, bombs having been dropped on the sand dunes and beach.

Although the decoy lighting system is long gone, the derelict control bunker is still standing and is located at N 53 32.469 W03 04.985. The bunker is about 300 feet from the cache site but you probably wont be able to see it when the trees are in leaf.

Although not relevant to finding the cache it may be of interest in that a recent archaelogical survey of the area a Radar Station (1939-1946) at Co-Ordinates N53 32.406 W3 05.277 and a Sound Mirror (1918-1939) at Co-Ordinates N53 32.523 W3 05.461 were recorded. However there is no physical evidence for you to see.

Parking is available at Lifeboat Road Car Park Co-Ordinates N53 33.031 W3 05.720 however there is a charge during the summer (£3.50 at the time of writing May 2008.) You can however park on St Lukes Church Road, please note that this can get very busy particularly at weekends and bank holidays.

You can park about 150 feet from the cache at Co-Ordinates N53 32.499 W3 04.945 but you do so at your own risk. This track has numerous pot holes and could damage your vehicle, those of you with 4X4 should be ok. Entrance to the track is at N53 32.782 W3 04.635 and is about 1/2 mile.
