Geocache Description:

An easy walk through some of Bordon’s military history ***Cache cleaned and replaced with a new log book. Please replace under cover!!!***

* GPS signals in this area are variable. This may (or may not) have something to do with RAF Oakhanger's highly visible Top Secret satellite signal station just a few hundred yards away.

The cache is hidden on the site of Oxney Farm Camp which was used as a tented barracks and training ground from before the First World War, originally for cadets. It is still owned by the military but has full public access. Oxney Farm was between the wars the home of the Bordon Drag Hounds, which was run by the officers of the artillery regiments stationed in Louisburg Barracks. The Bordon Drag met on Mondays and Fridays to hunt the fox and on Thursdays to follow the drag. Somehow they managed to fit in some soldiering too.

Oxney Farm Camp is now sometimes used for sporting events like cross country races, but most times it is empty except for the occasional walker. Part of the new by-pass road follows the track of the old railway line that connected Longmoor Camp, Bordon and Bentley. The original line from Longmoor to Bordon was a parallel narrow gauge track built in 1903 to move army huts to a better site. This was replaced in 1905 with a full-gauge railway, but was eventually closed and the tracks removed in 1971.

Walk up the track to the parade ground and a network of roads that serviced the camp. If you carry on after finding the cache, have a look in the woods by Oxney Lake where there is a huge brick wall peppered with bullet holes, the legacy of some military training activity a long time ago.

This area is very good for children to learn roadcraft on their bikes are there is a full roadway on the camp that is no longer used by vehicles, and a large paved parade ground.

Dog owners beware though, the 5,000 soldiers have been replaced by 5,000 rabbits...
