Geocache Description:

Located in a conservation area near Lake Wyola in Shutesbury MA, may be difficult to extract without getting wet.

Lake Wyola Town Beach and South Brook Conservation Area
Located on the south side of Lake Wyola in the northeast corner of the Town of Shutesbury, and accessed via Randall Road, the Town Beach Area and the two abutting conservation parcels provide public access to cross country skiing, fishing, swimming, hunting, ice skating, boating, nature observation, picnicking, and snowmobiling. The Town Beach Area is accessed via Randall Road and contains a large dirt parking area for cars and boat trailers. Trails that start off Randall Road and Lock’s Pond Road lead to roughly 100 acres of protected conservation land.

The best place to park is the Randall Road free parking area near an active public boat ramp where you will also see the back of Lake Wyola and it only adds a little hiking. My daughters wanted to place their first cache in the woods close to where they used to live in an area they hiked often. The trail is well established and has signage for the snowmobiles that use it for access to Lake Wyola. A portion of the trail seems to have been constructed into a ridgeline with considerable effort when it must have been more heavily traveled in a past era. There are plenty of old cellar holes in the area. You're looking for a .30 cal. ammo can. Warning my daughters are devious. While the cache is visible without difficulty, it is not within easy reach. If you cannot reach it with the direct approach (not sure it is even possible) you will need the dexterity of an 11 year old with a willingness to get ankle deep wet. Bug spray is also a must for mosquitoes. Randall Road is not plowed in the winter.
