PC = Paddle Cache.
Most of the Paddle Caches will be placed by canoe ("without a
paddle" caches may also show up), but all caches in this series
will be in, on, or around the local rivers and lakes. Some may be
high terrain and require some paddling finese, while others may
just require you to wade knee deep into a river to make the find.
All of them will hopefully take you to the less frequented
locations on our local rivers and lakes.
Visit PC#2 - Thorny Strainers! and Log Jams! to check
out the second cache in the series.
Visit PC#3 - Without a Paddle to check out the third
in the series.
Visit PC#4 - Smack Dab in the Middle to check out the
fourth in the series.
Visit PC#5 - Island Hopping to check out the fifth PC
cache.
Visit PC#6 - Storm Creek to check out the 6th PC
cache.
Visit PC #7 - The Good, the Bad, and the PUK'Y to see
the 7th.
When I placed the cache, the water was running at about 400 to
600cfs and when tested by hike it was about the same. The link
below will provide an idea of the discharge near the cache - I
would be very careful about getting this cache if the discharche is
above 1500-2000cfs:
Real-Time Stillwater River Data
Since this is the first in the series, we'll start you off easy.
There is this beautiful little creek that I have paddled by many
times but never investigated until recently. It is a spring fed
creek that comes into the Stillwater River and it has a little bit
of drop near its mouth and several nice pools upstream - making for
a very pretty scene of swift moving water where it dumps into the
Stillwater.
This cache was placed by canoe on a fantastic Memorial Day Weekend.
If coming by canoe, I can tell you that you will see the creek come
into the Stillwater from the west when you get close and there is a
little island there that serves as a nice landing. Once landed,
just walk up the creek. Even though this cache was placed by canoe,
it is only rated a 4 terrain because you can also hike to the
cache.
Slammer47 tested this cache, since it is part of bennet's Ohio Net
cache, and he obtained some outstanding recon which I am providing
below (#'s 1-3)for those of you who plan to get the cache by hike
following his route.
*Update - I replaced the cache (which was washed
away during the last great flood) by hike and I parked along the
road, followed miami conservancy property along a tree line,
entered the woods and followed the creek to the cache. Wading
through the creek was beautiful and I will post all coordinates
below. Now you have two hiking options - Slammer47's outstanding
recon option or the wading through the creek option - take your
pick, they are both outstanding hike options*
1. Slammer parked at an out-of-business taxidermy place on 48,
across the road from the general cache area - N 39° 54.988 W
084° 18.563.
2. Slammer walked along a woodsline next to a farm field until he
reached the following location, where he entered the woods.
N39° 55.136 W84° 18.022
3. Slammer's parking coordinates are listed below, based on
slammer's data. The hike to the cache using slammer's route is also
going to be a short .5 miles from his parking spot.
Check the hints if this gets tough for you - the hints will narrow
your search substantially.
For those of you who come by hike using slammer47's recon, give
slammer47 a great big thank you - he provided recon information
that would rival anything provided by the special ops in our U.S
military - THANKS SLAMMER!
This cache is part of bennet's network cache Ohio Net - Sometimes she writes me letters.
