The Tobique Salmon Barrier was established in 1987 as a joint venture between the Provincial Department of Natural Resources & Energy, the Federal Department of Fisheries & Oceans, The Tobique Salmon Protective Association and Fraser Papers. The project was initiated in response to a continual decline of the Altantic sea run salmon population in the upper reaches of the Right Hand Branch Tobique River, which includes the Campbell and Serpentine branches.
The 1/2 Mile Pool site was selected speciafically to protect the salmom of the Right Hand Branch Tobique river. It is the most significant salmon spawning tributary of the Tobique watershed and includes the Serpentine river, famous for producing some of the earlierst run Atlantic salmon in the Province of New Brunswick.
The 1/2 Mile Pool site is one of the largest natural holding pools in the Right Hand Branch Tobique river. In addition, there are cold underwater seepages along the rock ledge found within the pool which provide additional protection to salmon during the warmer summer periods.
In addition to regular salmon protection duties, Staff are directly involved on a daily basis in public relations, providing guided tours for various groups, schools and the general Public.
Upon visiting the site, please say Hi to Uncle Phil
