Geocache Description:

Welcome to the James R. Simono Memorial Cache page. This cache is in honor of my Dad, who passed away 5 years ago next month. Jim was diagnosed with leukemia after a full battery of medical tests in preparation for climbing Denali. Thanks to him, this was the first of many mountains for me. The cache was placed for Memorial Day 2008, and is located near the summit of Rainbow Peak at 3543’. There is a neat natural rock formation at the top that makes for a great place to just hang out and enjoy the view.

I was just a little squirt in 2nd grade when he pulled me out of school one day to go hiking here. I think he had planned on going as far as I'd make it, which ended up being the summit. During my youth, he burned a love of the outdoors and climbing mountains into me that I am forever grateful for. After that day nearly 16 years ago, he un-officially renamed it Jeremiah Mountain, and the name stuck with the family. There are actually other mountains renamed after his kids elsewhere, but I was the first! And oddly enough, I was the youngest out of 6. Some were more resistant to the burning I guess.

This spot was very special to my father and one of his all time favorites. Once, when he was alone here, an eagle floated up over the ledge, riding the wind, right in front of him. Both were very surprised to see each other there. He said he could see right into its eyes, and that it was just a very powerful moment. One he would never forget. I’m almost certain there is a family of eagles that still nests somewhere near there (and I assume it has always been the same one). They were flying around when I placed the cache, so watch for them. If they are there, one will usually come in closer to check you out. Don't just look for them at the summit either, they will see you before you see them. I've had them swoop in and check me out while on my way up the ridge.

Well thanks for reading and enjoy the climb. If you haven’t been there, it is easily one of the most satisfying climbs you can do near town, that doesn’t take all day. It might just be me, and I get that euphoric feeling to some degree from every mountain I climb. The Rainbow trailhead is just down the arm from Beluga Point, and before Falls Creek. Take the foot trail up through the trees until you reach a nice look-out/picnic spot on your left with a view. There you will notice a scree trail heading up the ridge on your right. From there it's pretty straight forward (and up). Follow the trail and ridge up to the saddle at the base of the summit, then around and up the back way via the scree slope to the right. Cache is just off the summit towards Turnagain arm. You might want to check out the hint (first) and possibly the link to a photo below. It's well hidden.
