A traditional cache located adjacent to the north end of Bolton-on-Swale Lake and accessed along a partially un-made road.
Bolton-on-Swale Lake is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A former sand and gravel quarry, the site has been deliberately flooded and now forms part of the extensive Swale Washland, an area of comparatively flat lowland landscape crossed by the river in its middle and lower reaches. The lake is now managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust who have provided a Bird Hide, located 25m south west of the cache site. Regionally important numbers of Wigeon winter on the Lake with peak winter counts of 1,300 birds having been recorded. Grey Lag Geese, Goldeneye, Pochard and Teal also overwinter and the Lake is home to many other species including Curlew, Lapwing and Golden plover.
The Lake can be accessed (carefully!) by car along the partially un-made Back Lane and there is a car park at N54 23.021 W001 37.074 just to the north of the lake and within 100m of the cache, although you may prefer to walk or cycle along the lane if you value your suspension. Access to Back Lane is off the B6271. You can either approach from the north between Brompton-on-Swale and Scorton at N54 23.483 W001 37.385, where there is parking on the side of the Lane which is around 1.1km from the cache site, or from the east at between Bolton-on-Swale and Great Langton at N54 22.885 W001 36.645, where again you can park at the side of the Lane around 500m from the cache.
