An island in a lake on an island in a lake? A fun cache by kids for kids in a beatiful natural area. Wear boots or water shoes.
The former narrow gauge railroad track foundation of the East Quarry operation here from the late 1800's spans this lake, giving it its shape and name - Horseshoe Pond. The lake is filled and somewhat shallow, due to the technology of the day that only let them quarry to a limited depth (compared to the deep active quarry on the West side of the island). Keep your eyes open for nesting birds, snakes, and snapping turtles. Walk with care if wet conditions and look for trails - as well as loose rock. No boats needed or allowed. Note that there is parking for the East Quarry on Ward Road, right across from Kampfe Lane. The cache is rated a 3.5 because getting here to look for it is half the challenge - you need to get to the island by boat, plane, or Ferry, secure transportation to get to this spot, and take a nice hike...
