A trip around some points of interest in the village of Armadale with a final cache on the outskirts of the town.
"The place name Armadale first appeared on maps of West Lothian in 1790, when the lands on which the town stands were purchased by Scottish Law Lord, Sir William Honeyman.....to which he could retreat at weekends from his busy law practice in Edinburgh.
The distinctly rural nature of Armadale at this time is recalled by the name Barbauchlaw....a corruption of Boar Baughlee...a reminder that the Scottish kings, riding out from their royal palace at Linlithgow, used to enjoy hunting the wild pigs...... [Armadale] was still situated in peaceful, undisturbed farming country, of which the town's nickname of The Dale is still a reminder."
Extract from Armadale in old picture postcards by William F. Hendrie
The cache begins at N55 53.967 W003 42.002.
This is the home of Armadale Thistle FC. Formerly a training ground for C Coy, Volunteer Battalion, Royal Scots, it became the home of Armadale FC in 1889, and Armadale Thistle in 1935.
At this point you will find a blue and silver sign above a gate.
Using A=1, B=2, C=3, etc, subtract the 2nd letter of the 2nd word from the 7th letter of the 1st word. This is A.
Outside the council buildings at N55 53.916 W003 41.992 is a statue called Communication, by the artist David Moore. There is a date on the statue, add the 1st and 4th digit together. This is B.
Across the road at N55 53.919 W003 42.013 is a memorial to Elizabeth Kerr, killed saving a child on 26th November 19C9.
At N55 53.921 W003 42.072 is a statue, Industrial Plant by John Hunter. It was erected in 199D.
At N55 53.914 W003 42.129 is The Goth Bar with it's well known leaning tower:
In 1901 the East of Scotland Public House Trust Company was established in Edinburgh at 29 Rutland Square to acquire and build anew public houses that were owned and managed with temperance as their goal. The movement was inspired by developments in Sweden to combat widespread brandy drinking which the City of Gothenburg had pioneered. Publicans were incentivised to sell food and non alcoholic drinks not alcohol, and loan funds were restricted to modest rates of interest. It reached its high point with the nationalisation of Carlisle's Public Houses during World War I. The Goth in Armadale is one of the few remaining in Scotland.
On the front of the tower is a date AD 19E4
A final statue at N55 53.911 W003 42.151 acknowledges armadales coal mining past. Using A=1, B=2, C=3, etc, take the 7th letter of the title of the statue. This is F.
You can now go to the final cache location at N 55 5A.BAD W003 4F.ECB
