Granite is a coarse or medium-grained intrusive igneous rock that is rich in quartz and feldspar. It is the most common plutonic rock of the Earth's crust, formed by the cooling of magma at depth.
Granite may occur in dikes or sills (tabular bodies injected in fissures and inserted between other rocks), but more characteristically it forms irregular masses of extremely variable size, ranging from less than a few square miles to larger masses (batholiths) that are often hundreds or thousands of square miles in area.
Sculpted Rocks
Sometimes when the conditions are right rocks can take strange shapes. These shapes can be helped along by cavernous weathering and under-cutting. These processes result when moisture is trapped on a rock surface or in the soil long enough to begin to dissolve away and decompose certain materials in the rock. Running water and wind then act as agents to wash the sand away. Surfaces weathered in this way are often found on the shady side of rocks where moisture doesn't evaporate as quickly.
Hanging Rock was a British post garrisoned by the Prince of Wales' American Regiment, part of the British legion, and a large force of Loyalists, all under the command of Major John Carden. On August 6, 1780, General Thomas Sumter made an attack on this position with a band of Patriot militia and won a great victory, although short of ammunition and outnumbered two to one. Among the impressive rock formations in the vicinity of the battlefield is the huge boulder known as the Hanging Rock.
YOU WILL NEED A TAPE MEASURE TO LOG THIS CACHE! At least 25' in length.
To log this cache you will need to provide the following.
1:What is the height (at the front in the center there is a large rock, measure from the top of this rock up) of the spot under the boulder made by weathering?
2:What is the depth?
3:And of course a picture of you or your group with your GPS (A picture on top of the main rock will be ok, the graffiti in such a beautiful area is quite embarassing.
