Geocache Description:

Most people visiting Lillehammer don't make it farther than Main Street (Storgata) and the outdoor museum at Maihaugen. Storgata is a "shop 'til you drop"-street for pedestrians and  of 1994 Olympic fame. But there are other interesting streets in Lillehammer and here comes a cache in one of them.
This cache is of course dedicated to the renowned local cacher
StepByStep.

View from the proposed starting point

The long, but not winding road

Stylish......right?

When it comes to architecture, Storgata is pretty much destroyed. But there is a road called Gamleveien (The old Road) with a lot of the old buildings still there and this road offers a charming walk in an old town environment. On this road the rumbling from the Coca-Cola trucks are seldom heard.

A suitable starting point for finding this cache may be at

N 61º 07.143 E10º 27.907

That should be around 400 meters away from the cache.

When you find the cache you will have a good view of a stylish mansion built in 1905. At that tome it was located just outsoide the Lillehammer city border ( the border then followed the old road - Gamleveien.)

The architect was Hermann Major Backer (1856-1932). He also designed Jønsberg Landbruksskole, Arbiens gt.1 in Oslo, Backergården in Oslo, Madserud gård og Holtegaten 20 in Oslo. His son Lars Backer (1892-1930) was also an architect. His most famous works are the Skansen restaurant (now gone) and the Ekeberg restaurant (recently restored), both in n Oslo.

The Mansion originally sat on a 13000 m² plot, but the third owneres - in the 1930's - started to sell of plots for building of residental houses. So now  the mansion sits on a 2500 m² plot.

You don't have to enter private property to find this cache.

Park your car in Lillehammer centre and walk a part of  the old road (Gamlevegen) to find this cache.

The cache is a film cannister and only partly visible.
