Reunion Arena is located in downtown
Dallas next to the landmark Reunion Tower/Hyatt Regency Hotel
and the newly expanded Dallas Convention Center. It is
now a part of the Dallas Convention Center. The facility
was designed by HKS - Harwood K. Smith & Partners
architects and opened in April 28, 1980. The opening
performance was May 9, 1980 featuring Parliament & The
Funkadelics.
Reunion Arena has hosted the NBA All-Star Game as
well as the NCAA Final Four Tournament, the world-famous Ringling
Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus and international rock
concerts. It was the first home to the Dallas Mavericks and
the Dallas Stars.
In September of 2005 it was a shelter for over
1000 Hurricane Katrina refugees and is still used today as a venue
for large events although the sports teams have moved to the
less-intimate American Airlines Center further north.
Unfortunately (or fortunately depending what side you're on),
current talk has been of tearing down the building and expanding
the Convention Center or converting the site into a casino (my
favorite choice).
Free parking (Shoot! Any parking!) can be
difficult around here on the weekdays. Also, the streets are
one way so stay aware of Dallas' finest. Good luck!
