Geocache Description:

The low-water crossing at the Union Covered Bridge was built by Charles Hamilton to accommodate truck traffic from his rock quarry just west of the bridge. Now that the bridge is closed to traffic, it is the only crossing available for local traffic. It is NOT PASSABLE during high water.

Our cache is placed in honor of Uncle Charles who was/is very special to us. He stood 6'6", a giant to a kid. But he was a gentle giant and loved far and wide by those who knew him. He had a heart of gold and was not hesitant to share his bounty.

We are starting the cache with a new John Deere TB which we think he would have liked. The cache is a plastic dry mix drink container large enough to hold a number of trade items.

Caution: Please do not try to enter the crossing during high water times. The cache can be reached without going near the crossing. Hours for the site are sunrise to sunset. Permission for this cache was given by John Huffman, Mark Twain Museum, Florida, MO, Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites.

As you can see the bridge sustained a lot of damage from a couple of recent floods. Hard to imagine that the river was actually running through the bridge. Some boards were removed to release some of the pressure of the water flow. Otherwise, the bridge itself might have gone downstream. That is in fact the story of the covered bridge that once stood on the east edge of Paris near Walnut Grove Cemetery. It went downriver in 1957!
