Roundhay Historical Trail 1 Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

SpikyTyke: It has been my pleasure to look after an elderly relative for the last 2 years - however I haven't found the time to either go geocaching or maintain the caches I have. Unfortunately therefore I am archiving all my caches. I hope to be able to come back to caching at some point. Best wishes to all.

Geocache Description:

A few metres of off footpath walking - grass could be wet. Cache has room for small trackables/exchanges. Likely to be muggles at the final co-ords.

The above co-ords are not for the cache – they are for the car park next to St John’s Church. The drive to the church is along the road 20 yards to the left from the car park. The co-ords for the cache are N53 49.ABC W001 29.DEF

I hope this puzzle will give you some information about St John’s – and maybe interest you to find out more. Some of the information for this cache is available on the Internet (visit link) is one such source) – for other information you will have to look in the churchyard.

Q1) The car park, part of Roundhay Park, used to be the site of an open air swimming pool. When was the park opened? = 1A72. See also (visit link)
Q2) Roundhay has a Gold Medal Olympic winner, lightweight wrestling 1908, in George Frederick William De Relwyskow. His grave is due north from the turning circle by church. There is now a bit of a mystery – it appears that George trained special forces at Camp-X in unarmed combat and small arms during WW2 in Canada – however some reports record him as died fighting in Burma in 1943 aged 56! The remaining family state that he did indeed go to Canada but died in a traffic accident in 1942, the date on the grave. It seems likely that he never made it to Burma. How many laurels are there etched on the grave? = B. See also (visit link)
Q3) St John’s Church was built with funds from Mr. Stephen Nicholson. Local lore has it that he also built the almshouses - as an act of reparation after his game keeper, Charles George Thompson, been mistaken for an intruder at the Mansion late one night, was shot and killed by Stephen’s nephew. How old was the game keeper on his death? = DC The gravestone is in the south churchyard, which is no longer accessible due to being in a dangerous condition – however the poignant grave inscription can viewed at (visit link)
Q4) There is a grave stone against the southern side of the wall to the north of church for the 1st movie stars ever – Sarah & Joseph Whitley. They were filmed by their relative, Louis Le Prince, in the famous ‘Roundhay Garden Scene’ – the oldest surviving film. How many tiles does the cross cover on the gravestone? = E. See also (visit link)
Q5) On 1st July 1916, the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme, there was a national tragedy with 67,470 British casualties. At St Johns, 6 soldiers who died on that day are commemorated – and one such soldier, 2nd Lieutenant T.A.R.R.E Willey has an inscription on a monument just a little further on from the Whiteley grave. How many stones that make up the monument have lettering? = F. See also (visit link) with the soldiers link which gives a page on Lieutenant Willey.
