Geocache Description:

Maghera Old Church and Round Tower are to be found just outside of the village of Maghera on the Corrigs Rd.

This ancient ecclesiastical site is a surviving example of how early religious centres evolved in the Northern Irish landscape. Connected historically with the 6th century St Donard who is the eponymous source for the highest mountain in Mourne.

The site consists of a 'modern' church (circa 1825), a ruined medieval church with a 13th century graveyard and the stump of a round tower(10th century).

In the graveyard to the south is a broken 13th century coffin lid, which now serves as a headstone. More details of the site can be found on the notice board in front of the church.

PLEASE NOTE:- The 'modern' church is still very active and Sunday worship begins at 10am to approx 12pm - pls stay clear between these times.

ALSO

The gate at the entrance to the drive of the church (at the Corrigs Rd) is usually closed but at most times it is not locked so you will have to get out of the car and open the gate (and close it behind you!!!) yourself. If all else fails and the gate is locked you will be able to get through the kissing gate. There is plenty of parking at the church at the end of the drive.
