Geocache Description:

This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.

These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation, change shape and color at will and much more!

Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin)

Due to a mixture of primitive and specialized characteristics, this unique South American Bird is a mystery to modern ornithologists. One of this species' many peculiarities is its unique digestive system. Hoatzins use bacterial fermentation in the front part of the gut to break down the vegetable material they consume, much like cattle. Because of aromatic compounds in the leaves they consume and the bacterial fermentation, the bird has a disagreeable, manure-like odor, which is why this bird is also known as the Stinkbird.

The Hoatzin chick features a rare anatomical feature — two claws on each budding wing which help it grip branches and clamber about. When faced with danger, the chick can fall into the water to get out of harm's way. The clawed wings are then used to climb back up to the nest.

This bird also has eyelashes which are a great rarity among birds.
