This Cache is located very close to the Lake Sumner Road, the turnoff for the Lake Sumner Road is at the township of Waikari but depending on which direction you are travelling from you can also turnoff SH7 in between Hurunui and Waikari at Medbury Road.
The drive upto this cache is very windy and it is on gravel road for quite a distance, to reach the cache site you will have to drive through 7 fords but when we drove in they were all dry even after heavy rain during the night.We drove up there in our 4wd but there were several 2wd vehicles up there and there shouldn't be any issues unless there has been days and days of rain.
The Cache itself is a camo painted Vegemite jar and it is located at the Jolliebrook swingbridge on the Hurunui River and we placed it at the start of an overnight tramp.
The Original contents of the cache were: the usual Logbook, a spare logbook, stashnote, pencils, sharperner, a geocaching-zone.co.nz card, there is not really any room for swaps.
There are alot of options for tramping trips up in this area but we were just doing an overnight weekend trip and we headed upto Gabriels Hut for the night, this hut is very old, it has 4 Canvas style bunks, 2 of which have holes in them but it is a classic backcounty New Zealand hut, and we were the only 2 in the hut for the night and we got the open fire cranking, Awesome!!
After spending the night at Gabriels Hut we wandered onto Jolliebrook hut and then walked down the Jolliebrook Valley back to the you guessed it, the Jolliebrook Swingbridge, ( there is around 20 - 30 stream crossings in between the Jolliebrook Hut and the Swingbridge ).
Times: Jolliebrook Swingbridge to Gabriels Hut ( 4 Bunk ): 3.5 - 4 Hrs, ( you can also start at the Sisters Swingbridge and if you start there it will only take around 2.5 Hrs to reach Gabriels hut.
Gabriels Hut to Jolliebrook Hut ( 7 Bunks ): 1.5 Hrs - 2 Hrs.
Jolliebrook Hut to Jolliebrook Swingbridge: 4 Hrs.
