Portmuck - 'The Port of the Pigs'
This cache has been placed in a stunning location overlooking the picturesque harbour of Portmuck in Islandmagee. Islandmagee has long had a history of seafaring and the centrepiece to the Portmuck area is the quaint harbour, originally home to a small local fishing fleet. To the west of the harbour are limestone cliffs, which have often yielded prehistoric fossils.
Portmuck was once the site of an ancient abbey and castle and home to a coastguard station used to deter smugglers who plied their trade in illegal contraband along this isolated coast.
Today, a National Trust coastal walk gives access to magnificent views over the sea and Muck Island, an important bird sanctuary with nesting seabirds, Shags, Puffins, Razor Bills, Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Gannets, Gulls and the rare Roseate Tern.
***PLEASE NOTE***
Definitely do NOT cross the fence - the cache is easily accessible from the path!!
There is ample free car parking close by to the cache.
If you are feeling peckish and hunger is getting the better of you - there's a smashing cafe a mile up from the cache called Earl's where you can have everything from a coffee to an Ulster Fry!
