Geocache Description:

A multicache mainly based around Dean Cemetery which is packed full of interesting memorials, many of which are mini works of architecture.

We discovered this place last summer when we were visiting the Dean Gallery for the first time and happened to see the top of the pyramid poking up over the wall! It had to be explored further and when we saw what else was in there, this location went straight down on the list of places to set caches - even if I am not one of the locals!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CEMETERY IS ONLY OPEN BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 9AM AND 5PM.

Park in the Dean Gallery car park where the trail starts at the above co-ordinates. This is part of an artwork called “Six Definitions” by one of my favourite artists - Ian Hamilton Finlay - and I have included it here because I felt that this part of it fitted in well with the general theme of the cache.

The section you see here (facing the car park) is TEMPLE.

A = Look at the plaque next to it. The fourth last word on it is a number. What is it?

Now turn and enter the cemetery, following the path which starts at N55 57.142 W003 13.464.

You can do the rest of the clues in any order you like - the final cache is not within the cemetery grounds . The order below is simply the route we wandered when looking for questions for you to answer!

The pyramid is unmissable when you enter the gates.

B = Look at the first word written on the plaque on it. How many letters make up this word?

Walk SE along this path to the orange sandstone memorial down from the pyramid at N55 57.141 W003 13.416.

C = Henry Cockburn died in which month?

Carry on SE and turn NE at the corner to find a memorial with a dog on it at N55 57.112 W003 13.370. I love the comment about the person on this one!

D = Date of birth ?8.V.1875

Close to this at N55 57.118 W003 13.372 is a large, striking memorial. Look at the carving of a woman on it.

E = Jane Jack was 8? when she died

Continue along the main path until you come to N55 57.152 W003 13.362, and a memorial with griffins, rams heads and storks.

F = How many of each animal are there (you do not need to add these together!)

Make you way around to N55 57.194 W003 13.275 and find the memorial with several points on it to a builder - Alexander Gibb.

G = The date on it is 18?9

Keep going SW down this path and find the memorial to Major William John Gairdner of the Bengal Infantry at N55 57.174 W003 13.350 - it’s like a little temple with a hat inside it!

H = On the right had side of it at ground level is a carved sword and another hat or a bag (couldn’t quite work out which!). There is a number on this - 2?

Again keep heading SW until you come to a memorial with an urn on top at N55 57.168 W003 13.369. There is an animal on this urn (and we think also it’s younger self is carved underneath it too!)

J = How many letters in the animals name?

Find a way to get to N55 57.209 W003 13.360, where you will find a huge red granite obelisk.

K = Alexander Russel was born in 181?

Look for the memorial to the NE of this with a green bust flanked by two green lions. This belongs to a former Lord Provost of Edinburgh.

L = In which month did he die?

Walk down the path NE to the ornate Celtic Cross at N55 57.227 W003 13.297. Find the inscription for Anne E Nasmyth.

M = For how many years was she a devoted wife - ?0

Now you are ready to calculate the co-ordinates. You may wish to go back to the Dean Gallery for a coffee while you do this, or just to approach the cache from this direction.

Cache can be found at :

N55 57. (B - M) (A - K) (C x D)

W003 13. (J divided by F) (H - E) (L - G)

Checksum:
Northings (B - M) + (A - K) + (C x D) = 10
Westings (J divided by F) + (H - E) + (L - G) = 9

Note that this is a LETTERBOX cache, and as such the stamp and ink pad should remain in the cache at all times. Apologies also for the container - will replace with a lock and lock eventually!

Please remember to hide the cache over with the ivy!
