Michael Gaffney left Granard, Ireland, in 1797, sailing to America and arriving in New York before moving to Charleston. As a recently located Southern businessman, he left for the "backwoods" of the Upstate, where he built a tavern, store and home along the route where goods were being hauled from the busy port.
The town that grew up around his settlement was incorporated in 1875 and bears his name today. A replica of Gaffney's home, containing 24 original logs, was built in 2004.
Note: For Benchmark hunters two very cool ones are nearby FA0895 & FA0896
