Jacks Peak County Park - day use fee unless you walk or bicycle in.
While hiking in Jacks Peak County Park one afternoon, I heard a rustling sound in the nearby bushes. Probably just a bird, I thought. All of the small forest creatures seem to have the same character flaw of moving when they should be silent. Can't you just hear the conversation?
Bird 1: "Do you hear someone hiking our way?"
Bird 2: "Yes. What should we do?"
Bird 3: "Rather than sitting here silently, let's make lots of noise and then fly away at the last possible moment."
Bird 4: "Sounds like a plan. Let's do it!"
Well, you can imagine my surprise when out of the bushes leaped a very large, very fast skunk. Thankfully the creature quickly ran up and over several fallen logs and was gone. Apparently, Jacks Peak is also skunk country!
The original container was a clear plastic Lock & Lock cylinder filled with small trade items and a log. Please bring your own pen. Update 24DEC2017: container is now a dark green "mega bison" with geocaching logo on it. It is still "BYOP."
At Jacks Peak County Park, day use hours vary. When I visited, the posted park hours were 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Although free parking is available down the hill at the overlook, paying the vehicle use fee will allow you to park very near the trailheads.
