Downdaniel Castle, which is situated on the banks of the Bandon river was built in 1476 by Barry Óg, a Norman reputed to be descended from the royal blood of Wales. The castle is built on the North side of the Bandon river, a mere 9 miles upriver from Kinsale and so must have been a haven for early settles discovering its pristine woodlands of oak and rivers abundant with fish.
After a chequered history concerning both fact and legend, Downdaniel fell to English forces shortly after the 1641 rising. Cromwell then gave the lands to the Earl of Cork, but after this time, the castle fell into disrepair and was abandoned.
