Geocache Description:

Cache Type: This sounds funny, but you are looking for a black box (5" x 7" x 1") -- Enjoy!!!

Location: Located at the Hunterdon County Park System South Branch Reservation - Arches System parking area.

Description:
This area was named after the stone double arch culvert that spans Arch Street in High Bridge and the South Branch of the Raritan River. The Culvert and the 94 foot high earthen embankment were constructed between 1859 and 1865 by the Central Railroad of New Jersey. This construction occurred due to the fact the original bridge spanning 1300 feet could not support the weight of the locomotives. The old bridge was buried under the dirt of the embankment. The old bridge was the source for which High Bridge Borough was named. The main parking lot was the sight of the Dorland's Mill which existed in the early 1800's.

The County acquired the property in 1989 as an addition to the South Branch Reservation. The reservation totaling over a 1000 acres helps to preserve the watershed along the South Branch of the Raritan River as well as provide wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities. Also nearby, across the bridge from the parking area is the Home of North Hunterdon Little League. If there are any baseball games going on you will need to be extremely careful of muggles!

Recreational Opportunities:
Arches provides a popular location for fishing along the South Branch of the Raritan River. There is a small trail from the parking area on Route 513 to access the west side of the river and a couple of points along Arch Street. The river is stocked with Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout. A state fishing license must be displayed while fishing. There is one picnic site, first come, first serve, no reservations, along Arch Street for public use. Alcohol is not permitted at this location.

Parking: Parking is within feet from the cache. Parking is not available after sunset.

FTF Prize: There is a small frog FTF prize.

Congratulations to *** Bear Mom Scouter *** on the FTF!
