The Religious
Society of Friends in Ireland
Lynastown Burial Ground

Lynastown
burial ground situated in the town land of Moyrafety is one of the
oldest Quaker burial grounds in Ireland. The form of worship which
the Society of Friends, as the Quakers are more formally known, was
brought to Ireland by William Edmondson in 1654. Edmondson was a
store keeper who lived in Lurgan from 1654 to 1656.
The Society
of Friends believe and put into practice the principles of equality
and their form of worship is plain and simple. This simplicity is
demonstrated in their burial grounds which display either no
headstones or headstones which are uniform and simple in design and
contain only the name, date of birth and date of death of the
person. The first burial in the Lynastown graveyard was that of
William Lynas who died on the 20th June 1658. Most of the early
Quakers from the Lurgan area were buried in the Lynastown graveyard
and meticulous record keeping by the Quakers has ensured that
details of almost all the 200 interments have been
preserved.
The
Cache
This is a
small tab locked box, suitable for small TB's and Geocoins. As a
theme for this cache I suggest that you only trade badges and pins
into and out of this cache. While it is not essential it would be
nice if you would purchased a badge from a charity you support and
place this into the cache and then take one that someone else has
placed.
The entrance to the graveyard can be found off the Bluestone
Road at N54 26.223 W6 22.418, please note there is limited safe
parking here. The distance to the cache is short and flat, on a
good path, but the entrance does not allow wheelchair access, hence
the 1.5 terrian rating.
