Geocache Description:

Castle hill is the site of a scheduled ancient monument - an Iron age hill fort.

The cuts and banks visible on he top of the hill are the result of works carried out during the middle ages. The first 'Castle' to appear on the hill was a small structure built after the Norman conquest in 1066. In the years following this, there have been many alterations and additions to the structure found on top of this prominent feature of the landscape surrounding Huddersfield (it's the big pokey thing you see looking south east while driving along the M62 between junctions 23 and 24).

However, the current structure found on the hill, Victoria Tower, is recent in terms of the entire history of the area. Victoria Tower was built as a memorial to Queen Victoria and was opened in 1899.

There was, for many years, a pub on top of the hill. This pub was bought for redevelopment and torn down, then rebuilt. However, as the building was expanded without permission, the owners were ordered by the Kirklees council to tear it down again. The space once occupied by the building is now used as extra parking.

Today, the hill itself is very popular with locals and visitors alike, providing 360 degree views of the countryside for miles. Most weekends in summer there's plenty of kites up on the hill. There are also big open areas, just right for a picnic!

The cache is a clear, watertight plastic box hidden near a well used path on the side of castle hill in the shadow of Victora Tower. It is well hidden in quiet green space, away frmo the crowds; perfect for snatiching a few minutes alone with the view. But, you will still be in clear view of all around, so some discretion will be in order.

This is a cacher's cache It originally contained a few items with very specific value to cachers, among other bits and pieces. Each of these is in its own zip lock bag with a little descriptive explaining the following.

so please come prepared if you want one of these goodies! We've left a few spare labels and water tight bags just in case you're feeling extra generous!
