Geocache Description:

This cache is located near Lake Ontario in a lovely small park at
the foot of the Doris McCarthy Trail which runs through Bellamy
Ravine.

GeoQueen's Bluff marks the 2008 retirement of one of Scarborough's first female geography teachers, Cheryl Carr. In creating this cache, we honour her 29 years of dedication to teaching as she sets sail to the next exciting chapter in her life.

In May of 2008, Cheryl Carr was one of sixteen teachers from across Canada presented with the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence (visit link) . As stated by one of her students that nominated her for the award: “It’s hard to put into words the immense impact Ms Carr has had on her students...she is a teacher by profession, a leader by nature, and a nurturer by heart”. In addition to being a great teacher, to staff she has been a wonderful mentor, colleague, and friend.

Cheryl has been central in the development of Canadian geography curriculum in Scarborough. To celebrate her contributions and accomplishments, this cache is jam-packed with items celebrating the study of Canadian geography. The eco-friendly travel bug “Travelling Lite” will begin its journey here.

We have chosen this location to honour Cheryl’s teaching accomplishments for many reasons. She has introduced thousands of students to the amazing geologic and human history of Lake Ontario, its predecessor Lake Iroquois, and the Scarborough Bluffs. Much to our delight she has also incorporated geocaching into her grade 9 geography curriculum and subsequently there are many junior geocachers GPSing their way through Scarborough. Finally, Cheryl greatly admires the life and work of Doris McCarthy, whose home (Fool’s Paradise) overlooks this cache (for more information on Doris McCarthy (visit link) or (visit link) ).

***** It is our hope that those who seek and find this cache will log their find online along with a memory of their favourite teacher. *****

Park at the bend of Ravine Drive and Bellehaven Crescent (be sure to take heed of parking restrictions). This marks the start of the Doris McCarthy Trail.

***** FYI -- there is no need to climb down the rocks *****
