Geocache Description:

You will not want to miss this "monumental view" of the surrounding countryside! Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites are located high on a sandstone bluff (Oakville Escarpment) overlooking the Colorado River and the town of La Grange. The magnificent monument and tomb are tributes to early Republic of Texas soldiers who lost their lives in the Dawson/Mier Expeditions.

On September 18, 1848, the soldiers' remains were buried in this tomb with full military honors in a ceremony attended by Sam Houston and other dignitaries. When you get to the mural, be sure to read the interesting story of the Black Bean Death Lottery.

Click here to find out more background regarding these historical events and to see pictures of the park. The entrance is FREE. Open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. You are looking for a small plastic container with a few small trade items and a log book. Bring your own pen. Watch for snakes. No need to cross the barrier cable at the edge of the cliff in order to find the cache.
