Geocache Description:

Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites are located high on a sandstone bluff (Oakville Escarpment) overlooking the Colorado River and the town of La Grange. This cache will lead you to what is remaining of German immigrant Heinrich Ludwig Kreische's brewery, which Kreische (after immigrating from Saxony in 1849) began building in the ravine below his house in 1860.

This brewery was one of the first commercial breweries in Texas; it became the primary source of income for the Kreische family, and, by the time of Kreische's death in 1882, was a prosperous enterprise. Kreische commercialized his brew as "Kreische's Bluff Beer," and when a new batch was ready, he raised a banner emblazoned with the traditional German phrase "Frisch Auf!" or "Freshen Up!" Click here to find out more information about Kreische, Master Stonemason and Brewmaster, and to see pictures of the park. Be sure to visit Kreische's house as well; it's up the hill from the brewery. The entrance is FREE. Open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. You are looking for a micro. Bring your own pen. (Don't drop the cache or it could be lost forever!) Stay on the path; no need to cross railing in order to find cache.

1/31/10 Update: Please use great care when retrieving and replacing the cache contents to prevent the loss of the cache over the edge. Don't attempt to retrieve the container from its location, just unscrew the end and retrieve the log and the end cap. Sign and replace both.
