Geocache Description:

You will in fact be looking for a real school project that could not be used because of the size. It morphed into something twice the size it was intended to be. So what else would a child with caching blood think to do? Turn it into a cache container of course! Our next obstacle was to find an appropriate location to support the unique caching container. We have been looking for months and were surprised to find a perfect location very close to our home in Canonsburg. It is true that sometimes the things closest to home go unnoticed. It was a surprise though when we took the time to notice the street sign at the corner of the property reads School Street! It was a delight to meet with the owner of the old Strabane School property and receive permission to place the cache on the old school grounds. Please feel free to respectfully look at the old remains of the school while searching for our School Project Gone Bad! The Canonsburg Antique Mall II purchased the old building in 1991, the shop is open 7days 10am-5pm, but the cache is accessible at all times. The antique store is stocked full of many beautiful and unique items. The actual inside of the building is still remarkably like the old school, before it closed in 1958. The original flag holders and blackboards with erasers are still on the second floor. You can almost hear the sounds of reading, writing and arithmetic being done from days gone by.

One of the most striking things that you may notice about the outside of the old Strabane School building is that a portion of the right side of the building has been cut off! The portion cut off was the original front of the building. The building was cut in order to give them access to Interstate 79. The Interstate Act was passed on June 29, 1961. But the actual work for Exit 45-Canonsburg was not completed until 1967. Another interesting fact about the property is that in the past, it’s address was 1/2 School Street. Looking at the building it’s more like 3/4 School Street! If you choose to visit when the store is open, stop in and say hello to Harvey, the resident ghost. He lives upstairs in the bookroom. His existence has been confirmed by four independent sources. Harvey is a well dressed former teacher from the school. His teaching certificate ended up in the school after he passed away, and has since been sold. But Harvey came along with the certificate and has never left. If you would like to know what the container looks like before your adventure into the past begins, decrypt the hint below. The container is large, but the actual inside is small. Therefore, there is no room for trades. Please bring a pen for signing, or maybe more appropriately an ink well and quill.

THIS CACHE RETAINS WATER AT TIMES. WE ARE AWARE AND PLEASE DO NOT INDICATE THAT IT NEEDS MAINTENANCE. THIS CACHE IS NOT ACCESSIBLE FROM INTERSTATE 79.
