Micro Cache near a large parking lot in SE DC. Just a log so please bring a pen!
This is a cache in a series to get people to explore/discover the "new and improved" Southeast DC area.
Well, I can't say the old building that was here before was paradise (far from it), but they definitely "put up a parking lot". I watched the building that was here get demolished as I commuted to work each day. I waiting in anticipation of the new structure that might be put here, and was surprised they destroyed such a large building just to put in a parking lot - so now I hum the tune to that song each time I go by this area.
Across the street is the historic Washington Navy Yard, which is the U.S. Navy's oldest facility established in 1799. It evolved from a shipbuilding center to an ordnance plant and then to the ceremonial and administrative center for the Navy. The yard is home to the Chief of Naval Operations and is also headquarters for the Naval Historical Center and numerous naval commands to include the super cool NCIS (like on the TV show). ~~Please be mindful that this was also the location of the tragic shooting on September 16, 2013 that killed 12 people and injured 3 others. Please be respectful if any guards ask you what you are doing should you appear to be acting suspicious.~~
Also, just north of the parking lot/cache is a statue of John Phillips Sousa (viewable through the fence) on one of the local Marine compounds.
Extremely high muggle activity in this area. Please replace cache as found, else someone might spy it from the parking lot or up the street. Also, while it is available 24/7, this area is still very transitional, so please do not cache for this alone late at night.
